AHU Supply Air Temperature Reset Optimization
A large office building experienced occupant comfort complaints and excessive compressor runtime across multiple air handling units.
Problem
The AHUs operated with a fixed SAT setpoint year-round, causing overcooling during light loads and unnecessary mechanical cooling.
Approach
Trend analysis was performed on SAT, RAT, OAT, VAV damper positions, and cooling valve output.
Solution
– Implemented dynamic SAT reset based on VAV demand
– Raised SAT during low load periods
– Added reset limits and safeguards
Results
– Reduced compressor runtime by approximately 18%
– Improved occupant comfort
– Lowered reheat demand and energy consumption
