Mechanical Failure Detection – ECM Fan Wall System

An air handling unit equipped with an ECM fan wall system exhibited erratic and inconsistent operational behavior.

Problem

– Motors remained energized when controller was off
– Loss of operation when controller was enabled
– No consistent fault indication

Approach

Combined electrical and mechanical diagnostics were performed:
– Verified control voltage and signal integrity
– Isolated motor power supply behavior
– Investigated internal motor components

Findings

– Internal capacitor within ECM motor retained residual charge
– Caused backfeeding and interference with control signals
– Temporary resolution achieved through power cycling

Solution

– Identified failing ECM motor components
– Recommended replacement of affected motors
– Advised on preventive diagnostics for similar issues

Results

Restored normal and predictable operation
– Eliminated erratic behavior
– Prevented further equipment degradation
– Improved system reliability and maintainability
